A First Marathon Experience

I ran my very first marathon – the Canadian International Marathon - in Toronto on October 14, 2001. Two years earlier, I never would have dreamed that I could do it. My running “career” began the summer of 1999 here in Ottawa. That fall, I completed my first 5K race. What a rush - I was hooked!

I ran several 5K and 10K races over the next two years, then completed the 2001 Ottawa half marathon. I continued training, with my sights set on the Canadian International Marathon in October. It was a beautiful summer for long distance running. I ran solo, with friends, and with the Running Room gang on Merivale Road whenever I could.

On race morning I felt amazingly calm considering the task that lay ahead of me that day. As we began the race, the temperature was comfortable with a slight breeze, but soon rain and strong winds bore down on us. I talked with several folks along the course, enjoying myself despite the wet weather. The spectators were amazing, cheering us all on, even in the driving rain.

Around the 20-mile mark, I had to do some walking. My calf muscles simply would not let me do more than a fast walk. I gritted my teeth and forged on, making a point of having fun along the way.  I high-fived some kids and some fuzzy-costumed characters, took in some inspiring music coming from the sidewalks, and enjoyed the company of a friendly golden Labrador retriever for a little while, all while getting drowned in the rain. Ah well, I had trained in worse weather.

I summoned the strength to cross the finish line running - and smiling. I collected my medal and headed off for some food and a leg massage. Even though things didn’t go perfectly, I persevered, reached my goal, and now feel a huge sense of accomplishment. I am so happy and proud that I will wear my souvenir race shirts until they are rags. A marathon, especially one’s first marathon, is definitely an experience to be remembered for a lifetime.

My main goals for 2002 are to run a half marathon and then do a triathlon. I would like to try the marathon distance again, but will take my time getting there. For me, the pleasure is in the training.

Addendum:
June 2, 2003: As of this date, I have run two additional half marathons, both in Ottawa, several more 5K and 10K races, and very recently reached my goal of completing my first triathlon. A second marathon may or may not be in my future, but if it is, then I would like it to be here at home in beautiful Ottawa, Canada, where the race course is kinder to the body.
